While the empire selfies itself to death, the Earth reminds us who’s boss.
This morning, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake ripped through central Myanmar, killing over 140 people, destroying sacred temples, and shaking Bangkok so hard even the skyscrapers looked unsure of themselves.
Statues of Buddha collapsed in Mandalay. Ancient pagodas crumbled into dust. In a country already shredded by civil war, military rule, and disinformation-driven genocide, the ground itself gave way. And in Washington? Silence—unless you count the ceremonial tweet from the White House intern who handles “Asia stuff.”
Because here’s the truth: Myanmar’s already been filed under “uncomfortable,” somewhere between remember that Rohingya thing? and oh yeah, wasn’t Facebook involved?
Spoiler: it was.
Facebook’s algorithm, tuned like a cheap fiddle to outrage and fear, helped radicalize an entire military apparatus. It fed hate. It fanned flames. And it never looked back. As Amnesty International put it: “Facebook’s systems promoted violence against the Rohingya.” That was years ago. No one was held accountable.
And now the earth’s done what the rest of the world won’t: shaken Myanmar to its core.
While RFK Jr. dismantles America’s health agencies and Pete Hegseth denies texting war plans to a journalist, the people of Myanmar are pulling survivors from the rubble of temples, homes, and hospitals. They aren’t debating accountability—they’re looking for their children.
No split-screen coverage. No State Department pressers. Just a quiet shrug from the global north and another sunrise over broken stone.
The Buddhas fell. The silence was louder than the quake.
